Getting organized in 2016

It’s that magical time of year when everyone is on their best behavior — eating healthy, going to the gym, keeping up with their schedule and meeting all of their resolutions.

This year, I’m hoping to be more organized. I go in spurts, usually, where I’m good about utilizing my planner and my Outlook calendar, but this year, I’m hoping to be a little more consisent.

Here are the steps I’m following:

1-Find a planner with an efficient layout.

Last year, I bought a Sugar Paper planne from Target and loved it. In the past, I’ve tried a ton of different ones — big, small, monthly-only, ones with time slots — and the one I used last year finally was the right fit. I bought the 2016 one as soon as it came out and transferred all of the birthdays and important dates into it from last year. It’s 8 1/2 X 11 which I love and has a month layout, plus a week layout. The great change they made this year was to have the week on one side and then a whole page for notes — LOVE that! Great for making lists and taking notes on important items! The colors are so pretty, too — blush and gold!

Now that football is over, I’m looking forward to having Jason download the Wunderlist app so we can share to-do list…and I can make lists FOR him! Ha ha! One of my friends, Robert, told me his soon-to-be bride, Ashley, found this app and it’s been really efficient for them as they count down the days until their wedding. You can categorize the lists, as well as set reminder notifications — genius! Here’s a link to the site–can’t wait to get this in full swing!

3-Meal plan.

A few years ago, when the NBA was in the middle of a lockout and I wasn’t receiving overtime, I had to really budget for meals and was really dilligent about a meal plan. It was life-changing. WIth football season coming to an end, we still have a lot of Pelicans games and events, but I’m hoping to get back in the routine of meal planning on Saturdays and grocery shopping for the week on Sundays. It made me feel like my life was so much more together! Note: Jen from IHeartOrganizing has some great printables for meal planning — I often found myself using her sheet for my outline and grocery list.

4-Find an app for help! I’ve been starting to do some research on apps that are supposed to be like having a personal assistant. I’m going to try and test out Evernote and SpeakToIt and see if either of those are helpful. I’m a little old school and kind of love just using a planner, but I want to give it a shot…stay tuned!

Sharpheels.com: A True Team Player

Throughout high school and college, it’s ingrained in us that saying, “I’m a team player” in an interview is a must. Sadly, when you begin your career and years in, you realize that not everyone understands the true meaning of what it is to be a part of a team.

Thankfully, our Pelicans PR #squad is pretty darn awesome. We even take super fun selfies with old school sunglasses on 80s night!

SharpHeels.com: First article!

Well, I hope everyone had a great weekend. It was a bit of a bummer around here – Saints lost…Pels lost…LSU lost…and the weather was crummy all weekend.

On a positive note, the third annual PurpleStride New Orleans raised over $80,000 at its event despite some nasty weather yesterday morning. I was very lucky to volunteer at the event and the core team did an amazing job planning, as always! Congrats, guys!

I’m sending you over to SharpHeels.com for today’s post. I’m really excited to be a contributing writer for the site and my first article posted today.

Since I was in college, volunteering has been important to me. Our tennis coach at Bloomsburg, Marty Coyne, encouraged us to particpate in volunteer projects when we had the opportunity and also hosted Special Olympics clinics at our facility. When I moved to New Orleans, I wanted to be involved and have been very fortunate to spend time volunteering at Animal Rescue New Orleans, the local affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and Miracle League.

In 2013, volunteering hit its lowest rate since 2002, given that only 25.4 percent of Americans 16 and older had spent time working for an organization at least once in the prior year. In the two years after that, little changed; according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2013, the rates were 25.4 percent, and in 2014, slightly lower at 25.3 percent.

Work Dresses on a Budget

I’m VERY excited to talk about one of my favorite wardrobe staples today: dresses.

When it comes to work, I RARELY wear pants. Dresses, in my mind, are way less work and it’s so easy to throw one on, add jewelry, a cardi/blazer and a cute pair of flats or heels and I’m out the door.

From a work standpoint, I have a few staples that I have invested in, but, I tend to be hard on clothes, so it seems silly for me to drop $100 or more on a work dress that I’m going to beat up in three months.

My staple stores: Old Navy, Target and Forever 21.

I know, I know, it seems a little strange. Don’t get me wrong — I have a few great dresses from Macy’s that I scored on sale, but, for the most part, I’ve found great pieces at a great price point. Why spend $100 when you can spend $30? A lot of the Target dresses I have found (I have #8 in black), garner many compliments because they’re of good quality and don’t look inexpensive.

Below are a few choices from the three stores I mentioned. After writing this post, I may be making some purchases myself.

The key is the fit. Keep an eye out to make sure you’re looking at pieces that aren’t cut for junior sizes. Having a large chest, I usually steer clear of the junior lines in Target, especially, and the clothes in the Merona line are my starting point. Forever 21 tends to run REALLY short in the normal sizes, but in the small plus-size options, I’ve found that things fit a little more appropriately in regards to the chest area and in terms of length.

I love a good dress that I can wear during the day with flats and a cardigan and, to transition to an event or a game, I can throw on a blazer, heels and some dressier jewelry and be good to go.

BTW, how cute is the mint dress (12)?! More of a spring piece, but the lace detail on the shoulders was too cute to ignore!

Breakfast Recipe: Protein Shake + Caffeine

Like most people, I struggle with two things in the morning: making sure I have breakfast and getting caffeine into my system.

In the off-season, I find that I have more time to prep for breakfast, but once things get busy come August, that goes out the window. Enter combining my two issues and finding a solution:

A protein shake + caffeine.

I looked up a few recipes online, but ended up coming up with my own:

Ingredients

1.5 scoops of protein powder

6-8 ounces of water

2-4 shots of espresso

Instructions

Put ingredients in a blender and mix. Serve over ice in a shaker bottle.

Tip: If possible, make the espresso the night before and leave it in the fridge so it’s cold.

I’ve tried a few different types of protein powder, but my favorites are pictured below. Top: Smoothie King’s Chocolate Lean 1 powder (my favorite smoothie!) Bottom left to right: Muscle Milk’s Vanilla Creme, Mocha Latte (which has caffeine in it!) and Peanut Butter Chocolate. I thought the peanut butter chocolate wouldn’t work with the espresso, but it was delicious!
